Bovina Center Cemetery (USA)

This cemetery contains a number of Strangeway headstones ranging from the 1870's to the 1900's. These names have been included in the family history database and are assumed to start with migrants from Britain - probably Berwickshire, Scotland. Also many early records for Bovina Center include references to this family.

Full details for all surnames are on the Delaware County NYGenWeb Site . There are also details from two, related Strangeway wills at this site as well as an 1847 burial and property transfers.

Somerset - South Australia References Updated Jan 2003

Henry Bull Templer Strangways (1832-1920) of Shapwick went to South Australia in 1857 (arriving in Victoria on the vessel Simla in May 1857 ?). In addition to working as a solicitor, he was elected to the South Australian Lower House as the member for Encounter Bay in 1858. Throughout the 1860's he held a number of important ministerial positions including Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration under the Premierships of Waterhouse, Dutton, and Ayers. In October 1868 with the defeat of Ayers' third ministry, Strangways formed a ministry of his own and became Premier of South Australia on 31-Nov-1868. A post he held until 30-May-1870. He later returned to England as a practicing barrister and J P for Somerset.

His father Henry Bull Strangways (1808-1884) was also J P for Somerset and held land in South Australia (SA Land Register 1839) along with other members of the family (?) - see above Land Register.

Likely family members - Thomas Bewes Strangways (age 26 land proprietor) and Giles Strangways (land proprietor) - appear on the passenger list for HMS Buffalo which arrived in Holdfast Bay (later Glenelg), South Australia on 28-Dec-1836 from Spithead (11-Jul-1836), via Plymouth and Port Lincoln (24-Dec-1836), under the command of  Captain John Hindmarsh. South Australian Observer 1-Jan-1887.

Notes - the ship HMS Buffalo is preserved at Glenelg. Also Adelaide has a street named Strangways Terrace - "through the interference of Governor Hindmarsh, the street was named after Thomas Bewes Strangways, a prospective son-in-law."

Comments - As you can see Yorkshire has the most by far; with the ajoining York and Leeds regions having around 46% of all the Strangeway entries for the three countries. Some family movement can be traced - for example, all the entries for Preston seem to trace back to a family that moved from Nottingham in the mid-1800's. But the name has almost died out in Nottingham itself. The Strangeways name seems to be centred further north - mainly in Northumberland and the Scottish border counties or Midlothian.
