[gasmask]

Painting of this event. Oil on canvas 30"x 24" In Collection of Dr Ivor Davies Penarth South Wales.

Air Raid on the G.W.R. Railway sidings Near Maesglas Housing estate.

Circa 1940.

A loaded van of none other than crates of Whiskey was awaiting transit from the railway sidings. . A direct hit by an incendiary device set it alight up it went fierce flames and smoke.

Whisky to the Gods.

The Bridge depicted over Main Railway lines to Cardiff and West Wales. The Bridge Present day is a backwater of only memories rusted and in a poor state of repair.

I salute the countless men of the BEF forces with guns equipment and machines of weapons of war went over this bridge in 1939. Marched on their way to the ships before embarking for France.

Many young men who were killed in the withdraw from Dunkirk and France.

You can observe in the painting some of the smoke screen contraptions that put up a acrid screen of oil burnt with a spray of water to make smoke

The smokescreen came in to action and made smoke when the docks were expected most probaly on a moonlight night to come under attack.

Many older Local people with their roots from Maesglas will remember this old but now changed area.

It is very much altered as the Docks Way or road to Comet and the various trading buildings.

Even as I write this recollection it is changing to a back water with new roads being built.

The water filled pot holes of this old road. Now gone along with pigs cots and Dockers making their way to the ever familiar Muffler club for a drop of good ale.

A Drifting smell of boiling pig swill or smoke drifting from the allotment smouldering fires of gardener allotment weeds.

Some times mingling with a balmy added smell of soldiers excreta being incinerated in a make shift red brick contraption oven. At their Camp

The Soldier's who were in camp huts nearby the dock float area.

These Men who's duty guarded at gates and key points on bridges etc.

Also during this raid.

Mrs Davies house only three doors away from the Author's home. Sustained a direct hit with an incendiary bomb.

Mrs Davies was rescued from the burning house. By local volunteer ARP Mr Donavan and Company. They fire being extinguished by the use of the standard issue stirrup pump contraption and bucket of water.

Muscle Powered with up and down vigorous action of ones arms. And foot on round base outside the bucket containing water to steady the small pump.

A supply of replacement water being carried by men of the team and poured into the diminishing water in the bucket being used to put out the offending flames.
