West Riding of Yorkshire Register of Deeds

An Act of Parliament in 1704 provided for a public registry of deeds to be established in Yorkshire and Middlesex. It was to be an experimental, local system in the first instance. The Registry of Deeds in Yorkshire was opened on 29 Sep 1704, in Wakefield in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Registries for the North and East Ridings followed later. Any document dealing with legal estate could be entered in the deeds registry but registration was not at first compulsory.

The deeds registers contain "memorials" [abstracts] of the original documents; though there are also some original deeds. These documents, more often than not, contain valuable genealogical information. Separate indexes were made for each register - the original indexes being held by the West Yorkshire Archive Service at the Registry of Deeds in Wakefield.
