| The DAY Family Tree |
| I have been tracing my family history for several years and have managed to trace two lines to the late 1700's. Much of the original work was done by my mother who gathered information from relatives and collated it. |
| DAY |
|
The Day's seem to come from the Pancras area of London and I have managed to trace back to the 1840's and
I got as much information from my father as he could remember, but as yet I have been unable to trace the DAY line back beyond his father.
The family lived in the Pancras registration district, and there are lots of cousins etc. out there, but I don't know any of them as there has never been particularly close contact. I have my grandfather's birth certificate which gives his parents as Frederick James Day and Matilda McDowell who should have been married around 1880 as he was born in 1883 and was the second child. In the records for 1856 there is a marriage between a Frederick James Day and a Henrietta McDowell, this must be a relative, or a very strange coincidence. |
| HAYHO |
|
My grandmother's maiden name was Hayho, which is fairly uncommon, and should be traceable without too much difficulty.
However there is a problem.
As far as I know it goes something like this.
James John Hayho marries someone called Elizabeth around 1860 and they have some children.
Elizabeth dies at some point and James then marries Catharine Kate Parke in 1888, when he is 56 and she is 24.
They have some children, one of whom is my grandmother.
James Hayho then dies and Kate re-marries someone call Noble and they have some more children.
It is possible that Kate then died and Noble re-married, but I am not sure on that!! I think I have traced James John Hayho through the IGI and found his father James Hayho and lots of brothers, but I have not followed any of this up by getting GRO vertificates. |
| PARKE |
| Catharine Kate Parke's parents were Edmund Parke and Eliza Ayres. I have traced their marriage and have their wedding certificate. The most interesting thing on it is that Edmund Parke's father, William Thomas Parke, is a Professor of Music. |
| STOKES |
The Stokes family comes from Cheriton in Kent and can be traced back to the 1840's.The picture is of John Stokes and Sarah Goodburn on their wedding day, the seated man is thought to be Henry Goodburn, I do not know the identity of the seated lady. |
| WOODBINE |
I have traced the Woodbine family to a John Woodbine in Rotherhithe in the early 1800's.
His son, Henry Thatcher appears to have moved to the Isle of Wight, as the birth of Emma in 1847 is registered there.
I have some confusion, as according to the IGI his son William Henry was baptised in Rotherhithe in 1847, but according to his marriage certificate he should have been born in 1841.
William Henry married Eleanor Attrill and then moved to Northfleet in Kent soon after the marriage as Henry Edmund, his son, was born there a just over a year after the marriage. Many of the Woodbine's were Coopers and this may be the reason for the moves. Henry Edmund worked as a Cooper at one of the cement works near Snodland. The picture is Henry Edmund Woodbine, my g-grandfather, with his sports trophies |
| GOODBURN |
|
The Goodburn family appears to come from Newington near Hythe, at least that is the place given for the birth of Sarah in 1852.
From her birth certificate I knew her parents names as Henry Goodburn and Charlotte Holliday, but was unable to trace it any further.
I visited Newington and found a number of Goodburn graves in the churchyard, so I felt that it must be the right place. However I have recently been in contact with a Fred Goodburn in Australia who has given me some information about Henry and Sarah. Henry's name on the marriage certificate is GOODMAN and Sarah's is HOLLERDAY, no wonder I was having trouble tracing them. Fred is descended from one of Sarah's brothers and from him I have learnt that Henry Goodman was born in Capel-le-Ferne, which is just along the coast from Cheriton. |
| MAYGER |
| The spelling of Mayger is unusual and I have only found a few with the same spelling in Kent. I have a nasty suspicion that the Mayger's I have in the family tree are not the correct one's as now that I have the wedding certificate for John Frederick Mayger to Amelia Moore the name of John's father is not John. The John Mayger and Jane family come from Canterbury and I put them in as the only other Mayger's I had found. |
| ATTRILL |
|
The Attrill family are from the Isle of Wight.
I have information that they can be traced back to the 1500's to a person called John who lived at Rill, hence the name.
I have been unable to trace Eleanor Selina's birth and I am guessing that maybe she was not registered as Eleanor Selina as there are a number of other Attrill's registered at the appropriate time, one of whom is called Ellen. Eleanor's brother, Jess Attrill, was supposed to have lived to the age of 102 and been the Royal Yachtsman to King Edward VII, but this is not confirmed. |
| MOORE |
| The Moore family is supposed to have come from Ireland in the 1700's and originally been called O'Moore. |
